Staff get WiSe

Gary Kemp, Krista Hairon, Chantal Quaeck and Derek HaironWild life training in Jersey  are the first to be accredited Wild Life Safe (WiSe) guides.

The course was a joint initiative between Planning and Environment and Jersey Tourism. It was run by Stephen Westcott and Colin Speedie of Wildlife Safe (WiSe) UK.

The WiSe scheme is the only programme in the UK offering training and accreditation to outdoor activities specialists interested in the development of sustainable marine eco-tourism. The course is the national standard for companies running eco-tours to observe marine wild life.

This was a great opportunity to learn about good practice and to obtain nationally recognised training. Jersey Walk Adventures is now one of the first companies to obtain this award.

A ‘moonwalk’ to Icho Tower.

A Moonwalk to Icho tower is perhaps a better description for today’s walk.

We were not walking at night across a lunar landscape to the tower.Moonwalk to Icho Tower. Low water fisherman with rake to catch Praires (Clams).  Instead we were exploring the area this afternoon in fog. It certainly felt like a night-time walk beneath the moon and the stars as rocks appeared out of the mist and Jersey seemed a long way away with no sounds of any cars heard. Drifting through the fog we could hear the sounds of the bird-life and the distant voices of low water fishermen searching for Praires on a 0.8m low tide.

This was a good opportunity for everyone to see just how useful a compass can be to navigate with. It demonstrates how important it is to carry safety equipment with you when venturing in this area.

Lots of people were out low water fishing for Praires and crabs. Reports of 4 pound Bass being caught in set nets put out overnight.

We had a lot of different answers to the question Ramsar is…? The correct answer is a town in Iran.

The Convention on Wetlands, signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971, is an intergovernmental treaty which provides the framework for national action and international co operation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. There are presently 154 Contracting Parties to the Convention, with 1636 wetland sites.

Planet Jersey Exhibiton 10 February

The Planet Jersey exhibition was a chance to meet past and future  clients and   announce our walk dates for 2007. Saturday was busy and Sunday was just full on. Many were stunned at the coastline shown in the photos of our island.

The eco active Website is now on line and provides a range of environment  and ecological information for Jersey. Visit http://www.eco-active.je

Jersey walk and kayak adventures had a stand at the show which was very busy all weekend. Our quiz was popular and the results will be announced shortly.
