Walks to Icho and Seymour Towers
Jersey is host to some of the largest tidal ranges in the world. Take a walk on the sea bed!
Walk in small groups through the gullies and gutters with experienced local guides. Cross sand bars and rock pools to Seymour or Icho towers and discover Jersey’s very own wilderness area. Revel in the stillness and expanse of an area that is covered twice a day by the ocean which at low tide can be 1 mile or more distant, and encompasses some of the most impressive and valuable marine habitats found anywhere in the world.
Each walk usually lasts approximately 2½ hours. To reduce the environmental impact and maximise your safety and enjoyment, all walks are limited to a maximum of 10 clients to one guide. Click here for dates.
Seymour Tower walk.
Built in 1782, the tower dominates the Bay of Grouville. It stands 1.5 miles offshore and is surrounded by a mass of rocks and gullies that is home to a huge and diverse range of marine creatures and bird life.
The walks take you across sand bars and into the gullies and gutters which at low tide are empty of water. Stand in gullies that in a few hours will be filled with up to 30ft of water as the tide rushes in. This is a chance to discover our unique marine environment.
Learn about the history of the area and fishing activities which form part of our Island’s rich history. Observe low water fishermen searching for lobster and prawns or even the famous Ormer. Or just enjoy the experience of being away from the sounds and activities of everyday life in a place that is neither sea nor land. Every walk is different and new discoveries are made each time.
Icho Tower walk
1¼ miles offshore, Icho is a different experience from the walk to Seymour. Surrounded by reefs you will walk through the dry gullies catching glimpses of the wider panoramas that suddenly open up to reveal a mass of offshore reefs and sand bars.
Due to the tide range this walk is only possible on the lowest tides and many local people, though used to walking to Seymour Tower, may not have managed to reach Icho.
At the tower almost all of the south coast of Jersey is visible, and on a clear day the reefs of Les Minquiers can be seen 12 miles away, which at low tide dry to be larger than Jersey.
Moonwalks to Seymour tower
Nothing is the same at night when you walk over the intertidal sand bars and mudflats which make the south east coast of Jersey unique. Rocks take on a new form under the stars. You can perhaps spot phosphorescence glowing in the rock pools or catch sight of a lobster creeping about. This is a very different walk to experience in the cool of the night.
This moonwalk can be undertaken on most of our scheduled walking dates. Please contact us.
Icho and Seymour combined walk
Approximately 7 miles through gullies and gutters and past rocks that are normally submerged beneath the ocean. 4.5 hours.
This walk is outstanding and is a unique experience for the few who get the chance to undertake it. This is only possible on the big low equinox tides when the sun and moon combine to produce some of the lowest tides of the year.
Please note that a good walking speed is required. If it is felt that the group is not travelling fast enough to reach Seymour Tower and make landfall within a safe time frame, it is sometimes necessary to shorten the route for your safety.
Good footwear and suitable clothing is essential.
